Here comes your ghost again

But that's not unusual

It's just that the moon is full

And you happened to call

And here I sit

Hand on the telephone

Hearing a voice I'd known

A couple of light years ago

Heading straight for a fall

 

놀랍군요, 당신의 유령이 다시 이곳에 나타날 줄이야

그래도 뜻밖은 아니에요

보름달이 떴을 뿐이고

당신은 한 번 전화해보는 거니까

그리고 난 여기 앉아서, 전화기에 손을 대고

옛날 귀에 익은 목소리를 듣고 있어요

아주 오래 전..

어느 해 가을로 접어들던 때였죠

As I remember your eyes

Were bluer than robin's eggs

My poetry was lousy you said

Where are you calling from?

A booth in the midwest

Ten years ago

I bought you some cufflinks

You brought me something

We both know what memories can bring

They bring diamonds and rust

 

기억나네요, 당신의 두 눈이

울새알보다 더 푸르렀을 때

내 시(詩)가 형편없다고 핀잔주던 일이

어디서 전화를 걸고 계신가요

십년 전 그곳, 중서부의 공중전화부스인가요

난 당신에게 커프링크를 사주었고

당신도 내게 뭘 가져왔어요

그래요, 우린 알고 있어요, 추억이 불러일으키는 것을..

diamonds and rust (그 옛날 영화와 몰락, 아니면 행복했던 시절과 이별의 상흔 정도로 이해하면서..감상하는게 좋을듯~)

Already a legend

The unwashed phenomenon

The original vagabond

You strayed into my arms

Temporarily lost at sea

The Madonna was yours for free

Yes the girl on the half-shell

Would keep you unharmed

 

그래요, 당신은 불쑥 내 인생에 끼어들었죠

벌써 오래 된 전설같지만

씻겨야 할 신비로운 현상처럼

원초적 방랑자여

어쩌다 내 품으로 흘러들어와서는 

잠시 머물다 가버린 사람

마치 항해중에 길을 잃은 것처럼

여인(Madonna)은 당신 것이 되어 허물어졌답니다

조개껍질 위의 연약한 여인은

당신을 보호해주려고 안간힘을 다 했죠

Now I see you standing

With brown leaves falling around

And snow in your hair

Now you're smiling out the window

Of that crummy hotel

Over Washington Square

Our breath comes out white clouds

Mingles and hangs in the air

Speaking strictly for me

We both could have died then and there

 

이제 당신의 모습이 보이네요

갈색 나뭇잎이 떨어져 나뒹굴고

머리엔 흰눈이 내려앉고

저 Washington광장이 내려다보이는

허름한 호텔 창밖을 내다보고 서있어요

우리의 숨은 찬 공기 속에서 흰 구름을 피우고

맴돌곤했죠

이제 말하지만

그때 우린 같이 죽을 수도 있었겠죠

Now you're telling me

You're not nostalgic

Then give me another word for it

You who are so good with words

And at keeping things vague

Because I need some of that vagueness now

It's all come back too clearly

Yes I loved you dearly

And if you're offering me diamonds and rust

I've already paid

 

당신은 이제 난 향수같은 건 모른다고

말하고 있어요

그리고 다른 말을 찾아내는군요

너무도 말을 잘 하는 당신

그리고 애매모호한 말로 잘 둘러넘기죠

나한테 그런 모호함이 필요하니까

아,그러나 이제 모든게 분명해져요

그래요,난 당신을 끔찍이 사랑했어요

그리고 당신이 또 diamonds and rust를 주시는거라면

난 이미 그 값을 치렀어요
